Huh? What? I Can’t Hear You!!

IMG_0402

Hi Everyone!

It’s been a while since I’ve blogged as I have been super busy! Chris & I got to go on vacation for a week down in the Florida Keys with his brother Mike and his wife Seanna. It was very last minute that we decided to go as I had kept saying I couldn’t because I wasn’t sure what was happening with treatment. But after we got the news that the cancer had spread to my brain, we both decided we needed to go and get the hell out of here. I got to say, Islamorada is absolutely beautiful and I recommend everyone go see it! It was of the most relaxing vacations I have ever been on and I could not be more grateful that Mike & Seanna invited us down with them. Thank you Mike & Seanna for letting us crash your vacation!!

Right before our vacation, Chris got laid off from his job so that’s a huge bummer. They are saying he’ll be out another month, which sucks but it has been nice having him around to go to all my appointments and to hang out with during the day. Not that I’ve been much fun as the Taxol is kicking my ass. But the few hours I am awake during the day, its been nice to spend it with him.

So some medical news – As I mentioned above, Taxol has been brutal. I have been sleeping nonstop and when I’m not sleeping I’m puking. This drug is so much more intense than the Xeloda but I hope all these side effects means the poison is killing my cancer and working. I won’t know for sure until May when I head in for more scans but for now, let’s hope it’s doing its job!

As I may have mentioned in a previous blog, I lost some hearing due to the radiation. My radiation oncologist had warned me this could happen and that it could take weeks before it came back. Well its been over a month now since I ended radiation and it hasn’t come back. Because of this, Dr. Bunnell decided to send me to an ear, throat, and nose specialist at Brighams. I had a hearing test this past Wednesday and met with the doctor yesterday. During my hearing test, it was pretty clear to me that I was missing a lot of “beeps.” Once I was finished, the man who gave me the hearing test told me I definitely had hearing loss (because I didn’t already know that?) but that it was the “good” kind of hearing loss. Who knew that there was good and bad hearing loss? It all sounds pretty shitty to me! Anyway, I have what they call conductive hearing loss and mine is at a moderate level. So this means, it can come back and it should come back. So YAY – it’s not permanent!!!

When I met with the doctor yesterday he explained it in more detail. He confirmed my hearing should come back but that there is no way to tell when. It could be weeks, it could be 6 months. He gave me some options of what I can do in the meantime. I can either sit back and wait, I can get hearing aids, or I can get tubes in my ear. After he explained all options, the tubes in the ear sounded awful. Apparently most people see it help for a week and then it stops helping and they come back asking for them to be removed. You also have to deal with fluid just falling down your face from your ear at all times. Yeah no thank you! So I opted for hearing aids. In the meantime, I have some exercises I can do to try to unblock my eustachian tubes on my own. I go in on April 13th to get measured for the hearing aids and to pick them out. However, I’m still secretly hoping my ears will fix themselves prior to that!

Well that is all the news on the medical front for now. Hope you are all enjoying Spring and the weather getting warmer – today looks like it’s going to be a nice, warm 53 degrees!

Xoxo,
Chrissy

    I’m glad to hear your hearing is likely to return. Hearing Aids aren’t that bad, just be sure to keep them in a sealed container at night if you have dogs or cats. Something about the mold pieces that fit inside the ear are just so attractive to them. Are you getting an in-the-ear or behind-the-ear model?

    I will be happy to entertain you if you start falling behind being able to keep up with the group, conversation-wise. I’ve been there so I know what it’s like. I hope you’ll be feeling more alert and stronger for the conference.

    I’m sorry Taxol is being so mean to you. ;_;
